A Collaborative Approach to Respectful Therapy

I adopt a personable, collaborative, and empathic approach to psychotherapy, emphasizing patient collaboration throughout the process. I welcome ongoing feedback because I believe patient input fosters a unique, custom-fit counseling experience for each individual.

What You Should Expect in Therapy

I believe my patients should always feel that the following expectations are met in our confidential therapy sessions:

  • Feel respected and not judged
  • Feel that I (Dr. Lapidus) am highly receptive to constructive criticism
  • Be fully informed of your diagnosis, treatment goals, and treatment plans, allowing you to be an active participant in these formulations
  • Have the option to quickly dive into 'the heart of the problem' or pace yourself, waiting until you feel comfortable and have a sense of trust
  • Have your confidentiality protected, with a few exceptions such as protecting individuals from harm
  • Openly question and discuss whether you feel satisfied in therapy
  • Experience active patient collaboration, where I (Dr. Lapidus) work alongside your other treatment providers, such as your general practitioner or psychiatrist
  • Feel comfortable asking for other treatment options and referrals based on our psychotherapy approach.

Additional Ways I Show Respect in Therapy

Weekly appointments are made available to patients because connection and dedication are integral to psychotherapy success. Appointments start and end on time, demonstrating reliability, which is essential for a safe therapy environment. Each session remains free from distractions; I focus entirely on you by eliminating interruptions from food, calls, or other activities.

Clients are viewed as people first.  I will take the time to get to know you and not overgeneralize from a possible diagnosis or treatment issue.   My feedback is honest and collaborative, fostering curiosity over judgment.

I don't subscribe to the concept of "resistance." If therapy stalls, it signals a need for deeper understanding rather than placing blame.

Your autonomy is put above all else.  This allows me to respect diversity and encourages you to explore your own answers rather than imposing my beliefs on you.

I'm committed to personal and professional growth.  I engage in professional training well beyond what is required to maintain my license.  I am continually aware of the saying, "if you have a hammer everything looks like a nail," and am constantly seeking to expand my tools.   This dedication, coupled with warmth and compassion, drives my work in my private practice.
